Intel’s TRC is designed to protect against certain types of physical attacks by monitoring the delay of specific types of digital circuits. Intel applied the TRC as a hardware sensor to detect these fault injection attacks and protect systems. Together, the three actors demonstrated that the TRC can be calibrated to recognize such timing violations as the result of an attack.

Intel Labs, iSTARE-PASCAL (Physical Attack and Side Channel Analysis Lab) and the Intel’s Client Computing Group collaborated to test the TRC in various security scenarios. Carlos Tokunaga, principal engineer of Intel Labs, explaining the research approach. “By modifying the monitoring configuration and building the infrastructure to adjust the sensitivity of the TRC to fault injection attacks, the circuit has been optimized for security applications,” he commented. As new technologies evolve, their applications also evolve. The TRC was originally developed by Intel Labs to monitor dynamic changes such as dips in voltage, temperature drops and aging in circuits with the aim of improving performance and energy efficiency. A favorite tool is fault injection attacks through voltage glitches, overclocks and radiation electromagnetic which cause circuit timing errors and may allow execution of malicious instructions and the potential exfiltration of secret data ”. “This has prompted hackers to turn their attention to physical attacks on computer platforms.

“Software protection is reinforced with virtualization, canary stacks and authentication of the code before execution“Said Daniel Nemiroff, Intel’s Senior Principal Engineer. The TRC is also designed to detect electromagnetic fault injections. The circuit adds fault injection detection technology to the Intel engine Converged Security and Management Engine (Intel CSME) and is designed to detect non-invasive physical glitch attacks on the pins that provide clock and voltage. This is the first time that a TRC has been offered in the 12th Generation Intel Core processor family. Tunable Replica Circuit (TRC) – Fault injection protection uses hardware-based sensors to detect so explicit the malfunctions in the timing of the circuits that occur following an attack. The company unveiled a new technique that complements the physical attack mitigation measures of fault injection already present at the software level.
